What is it?
Synthesis is the production of a substance by the union of a chemical element, group, or simpler compound, or by the degradation of a complex compound. There are two main ways in which Uracil can be synthesized.
- The first being, water and cytosine to produce Uracil and ammonia. This is reaction is the most simple of the two reactions.
- The second being, the condensation of maleic acid with urea in fuming sulfuric acid. This reaction is the most common of the two reactions.
Synthesis of Uracil (Reactions/Formulas)
1. Adding water (H2O) to cytosine (C4H5N3O) to produce Uracil (C4H4N2O2) and ammonia (NH3)
Or...
C4H5N3O + H2O ---> C4H4N2O2 + NH3
2. The condensation of maleic acid (C4H4O4) with urea in fuming sulfuric acid (CH4N2O).
Or...
C4H4O4 + CH4N2O ---> C4H4N2O2 + 2 H2O + CO
