The Discovery
Uracil was initially isolated by hydrolysis (hydrolysis is the decomposition of a chemical compound by reaction with water) of yeast nucleic acid and also produced in a laboratory during 1900 to 1901. The yeast nucleic acid that was used for this experiment was found in herring sperm, although it can be found in spleens and wheat germs as well. The scientist that is credited for the discovery of Uracil is a chemist that goes by the name of Ascoli. Although credited with isolating and finding Uracil, records do not show much information about Ascoli's personal life, but instead show how he was able to come up with this amazing discovery.
